At Least I've Got Pictures....

Okay so, I haven't written in forever I know! But life's been crazy so I have pictures to prove it. Hopefully, I will get a chance to write soon!
This was the best Mother's Day EVER!  Seth and Sam were both baptized that day.
Great is His faithfulness!
The boys started a new school year.  Seth is in 3rd and Sam is in 1st!  Good Grief-where did my babies go?
Ella Rose had a special date night with Mommy and Daddy.  We went to see Beauty and the Beast at TPAC.  It's her favorite and she was so precious to watch!
The boys played baseball for the first time ever!  What a pair they were out on the field!
We celebrated my Mom, my brother, Ella's and my birthday together since my family was going to be in Disney during birthdays.  My sweet Momma made a cake for each of us.
My brother requested a stripper cake.  This is my Mom's version!
My sweet baby girl turned 4!
My amazing brother turned 31 years old and had his tonsils out shortly after-POOR THING!
WE WENT TO DISNEY WORLD!!!  Kids got to fly in an airplane for the first time and everyone was old enough to remember this trip.  It was a great time, even with the stomach bug that hit some of us!
These amazing beautiful women let me hang with them for a day for the 300 Fit Games event.
What a great and grueling day!
And THIS incredibly fabulous woman agreed to be my partner and she didn't even cuss me for convincing her to do it!  It was an honor to sweat with you Candi!
Needs more kettlebell!
It only took me 34 years and 3 kids to finally be able to jump!
HATE THAT TIRE!!!  That is the stuff of nightmares and horror movies!
Ella Rose swinging at Smiley Hollow-the perfect Fall place!
Silly Seth on the hayride!
Sam with watermelon and corn on the cob from ear to ear!  So happy when he's eating!
Dancing with my baby girl!
A great night with lots of great friends!
So see, I promise I've been busy!

Letting Go?

I don't really have a plan for this post--heck, it may not even be coherent enough to call it an actual post! I feel like I've got so many things going on right now in this little noggin that an intelligent sentence would be an Olympic feat right now. I just wanted to say that I feel a sense of change coming, does anyone know what I mean? I feel restless in my soul, unsettled, uprooted, like an important time is coming for me. I feel a need for preparation, a need for time in the Word, a need for time in prayer, a need to be ready to stand up and maybe even speak out, a need to get ready to put into practice all that I've said I believe. It feels scary and chaotic and anyone who knows me, knows that feeling that way is devastating to me. And the same time I think, "Isn't this what I've always wanted?" Haven't I longed for the day when I feel like I'm doing what I was made to do. Haven't I begged God to show me my purpose. Haven't I so desired just to be useful in some way to Him? What if I'm not ready? What if I'm too scared? And the worst part of it all, What if I fail?! Well, wait a minute, is failing the worst part? Maybe not trying would be the worst part? Not trying means not really living. I MUST choose to at least try, to at least take one step at a time. I'm not even sure what that step might be so maybe I'll just start with picking my foot up and asking Him to put it down where He wants. I wonder if I'm the only one who's ever felt this way? I sure hope not! I don't really know what to do-don't really have any answers. Think I'll just take a deep breath, pray for the gift of faith for today, and pry my fingers off my life for once!

Stick With Me

I PROMISE I will be writing soon. I've got lots of thoughts jumbling around in my noggin but with 3 kids out of school, putting them together coherently is just not happening. Oh well, school starts back tomorrow and with it the dreaded but somewhat comforting routine. I hope you'll stick with me because I am sooooooo very excited about what 2010 is going to bring!

Prolonging Thanksgiving

Okay, so I know that Thanksgiving is over and the Christmas frenzy is in full swing, but I am a huge fan of Thanksgiving and so I will try and prolong it just a little by doing a Thanksgiving post this late. Of course, if you know me at all, you know that I'm a little late on everything! Anyways, I was thinking the other day about all the things I'm thankful for and I had this strange emotion. It felt alot like guilt. I don't know, it was weird. I just thought, "Lord, I have so much!" It's almost embarrassing how many material things and comforts I have. And well, all that my kids have is just plain obscene! I began to think about all the people who do not have all the "things" I have to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Well, just then, I turned my iPod on. (Again, if you know anything about my life at all, you also know that God is in my iPod!) I don't even remember what song it was but the thought hit me, there are things that EVERYONE can be thankful for whether you have little or much. The songs kept coming and so did the list of things we can ALL be thankful for. So here ya go--"Things I Am Thankful For" brought to you by the infamous Spirit controlled green iPod:

Freedom in Christ-He has purchased and pardoned me and bound to Him I am truly free
God's patience when I possess freedom in Him yet still choose imprisonment
He fights my battles for me
He makes all things new
He never lets go of me
The hope of heaven
His grace to give me wonderful gifts that I don't deserve
His sweet forgiveness and mercy in withholding from me what I do deserve
That we can trade our sorrows, our sickness, our pain, our shame for the joy of the Lord
Peace that doesn't make sense in our circumstances
His love that is perfect and unfailing and beyond our imagination
God is unchanging
He holds everything in His hands yet He still makes time for me
When the stress of this life weighs on me and my dreams are laying ruined before me-His love feeds my soul-it is truly "better than life"
God knows how to keep a promise and He keeps ALL His
That we can come into His presence, right up to His very throne without fear
His blood has provided my healing and it flows freely over the mercy seat where I am welcome anytime
He is our shelter from the storm
He is a shield for me, my glory and the lifter of my head
He hears me when I call to Him
Salvation by His mercy and transformation by His love

OK-so I could go on all day and only scratch the surface. BUT, I would like to make this a participatory post. Take a few minutes and prolong Thanksgiving with me. Think of something that EVERYONE can be thankful for and add it to this post by putting it in the comment section. Let's encourage each other AND show a little love to poor little looked over Thanksgiving. Can't wait to see what you write!

Practice

Just playing this morning! Seeing if I can figure out how to get pictures on here!

Yay!  It worked!  Thanks for your help Jessica!  Thought I'd put this cutie pic up because we are celebrating these two amazing boys and their decision to make Jesus the "boss" of their lives as they put it!  I am also celebrating the fact that God is truly gracious and merciful and has proven to me through Seth and Sam's decision that He won't let me screw them up!

A Bit of Encouragment

Today is going to be a crazy day! Gotta clean the house because we have guests coming tomorrow night, (Well, I guess I also need to clean the house simply because it needs to be cleaned!), do some laundry, carve a pumpkin, get up to the school to help with fall parties, whip up a quick dinner before Jimmy works off duty, and MC Family Movie Night festivities! All with the knowledge that tomorrow will be even busier! Such is the life for this season, and that's ok by me. I have really been wanting to get some time to organize my thoughts on all that God has been speaking to me so that I can share it with you and hopefully offer some encouragement, but alas, I do not see that luxury on the horizon. Maybe I should pray and ask Him to either carve out some time or give my brain extra multitasking power!!! So, once again, just a tiny little post today-SIGH. I have an overwhelming desire to share some little bits of encouragement that I have received from the Bible study I'm doing on Wednesday nights-Esther by Beth Moore-so here ya go....

"Repentance is NOT your punishment. It's your glorious right of daughtership. Your invitation to restoration." MMMMMM HMMMMMM-let that one soak in for a minute. That's a life changer right there!

"As painful as the process may be, that which shatters our superficiality also shatters the fetters of our fragility and frees us to walk with dignity and might to our destinies. We are not the fragile flowers we've considered ourselves to be. We, like Esther, are the warrior princesses of God." Oh man, this is so true of my life over the recent years and I can't wait to write more about it!

"Beloved, in the times of greatest struggle when you make the Godward decision over convenience, earthly comfort, or carnal pleasure, you too have come to a critical moment in the fulfillment of your destiny. A defining moment. A war is being waged over your head in the unseen realm, and a great cloud of witnesses is cheering you on. You have no idea what's at stake." Does any body else need to know they've got a huge cheering section just for them? I sure do! I need all the help I can get to make the "Godward decision" over what I want!

"As hard as trusting can be, living with constant fear is harder." All I can say is "Amen"! I can guarantee that nobody knows this statement to be more true than ME!

"Beloved, do we believe that the only way to do something acceptably is to do it perfectly? Sometimes God is more aware than we of just how much He requires of us. He knows how hard it's going to be for us. .....Sometimes, just surviving certain tasks without falling apart is our best and in those times God is not ashamed of our performance. He's proud of us for fighting overwhelming human emotions to do His will. God isn't interested in our stellar performance but in our hearts. He loves our willingness and obedience despite our insecurities." I just want to shout "Go ahead!" I know Beth Moore wrote that but good grief, I heard it in my heart and it sounded just like God's voice! And I KNOW somebody else out there needed to hear THAT today! Thank you Lord for reminding me that You aren't looking for perfection and that You KNOW how hard certain things are for me. And thank You, thank You, thank You that you are still proud of me (did anybody else need to know that He's proud of them?) when I just barely scrape by and survive those difficult tasks of obedience!

Well, I hope that someone has been encouraged! I know I have!

Avoiding the Grocery List

I'm supposed to be making out my weekly grocery list right now. Why is it that so many things in my life require creativity? I mean, seriously, think about the things that need a little creativity to make them happen. Scheduling, parenting and discipline, meal planning....it goes on and on. Some people, like me, are not naturally creative which makes me wonder why I'm adding blogging to the list of things in my life that need some creative juices. So, I guess with that said, you will not find this to be the most exciting or cleverly creative blog out there by any stretch of the imagination BUT at least I will have a way to visually see God's creative hand in my life. He's got that creativity thing down pat and I can guarantee you, when it comes to me, He's had to really pull out all the stops.

Well, the grocery list IS truly something that HAS to be done right now so I will not have time for a long post. I'll just say that I am soooo excited to have a new home here on blogger and I cannot wait to share with you all that God has been teaching me over the past couple of months. See you soon!

P.S. If you have any new ideas for meals for a family of 5 that's healthy and doesn't require hours in the kitchen, feel free to let me know!!!

A Tragic Discovery

Today marks a tragic day in my life-the discovery of my first gray hair. I've kinda always prided myself on not being concerned with my age-embracing each year with anticipation of the wisdom and experience to be gained. As I get older, I feel like I get a little more comfortable in my skin. So, I'm a little shocked at my reaction to my discovery today. There might have been some screaming involved, and pouting. I was shocked! I mean, it's just a hair right? I guess I've just always felt really young, even too young sometimes. Like, even though I'm a wife and mother of 3, I'm still a kid. This pretty much confirmed that I am getting older.

So, what do I do? I think I'm going to take some time to mourn my little "natural highlight" and then, well, I think I'll just accept it, embrace it, even try and find some pride in it. Maybe, I'll treat it like a merit badge or a symbol of a rite of passage. I hope that will be the case but at the moment, I'm not quite there yet. I'm still debating, so I can't promise that I won't be making a trip to my beloved LaBella hair salon though!

The Battle of Desires

I seriously pray that I don't finish this post, well, at least not tonight. You see, it's 3:35 am-such an ungodly hour and I have been up since precisely 2:22. So, I figured that maybe if I write, it will put me to sleep. I'm not sure what that says about my writing. I guess it depends more on if you fall asleep while you read it.

Anyways, I have been thinking about a passage we studied in Sunday School last Sunday. We are in James chapter 4.

1What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? 2You want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. 3When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.

4You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. 5Or do you think Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely?[a]

I am so thankful for this passage because it has helped to chip away at those cement blocks my feet are stuck in. I have been restless and tired from a battle I wasn't truly consciously aware I've been fighting. Actually, we all fight it. It is the battle of desires. I have housed a war inside this 5 foot 3 frame. The war between what I want and don't have, what I have and don't want, what is good for me and what is not. Our church recently had a celebration to welcome our new pastor and his wife. It was great-there was food and music and my boys' favorite-INFLATABLES! They threw their shoes off and tore out in every direction. Later, they came to me and said, "Momma, there's one we can do together!" It was a huge airmattress with a post in the middle and coming out of the post on opposite sides was a bungee cord attached to a velcro belt. Each boy strapped in and stood back to back waiting for the go signal at which point they were to take off and run toward a basketball hoop type ring and throw in their ball. The hard part was that they were pulling against each other. Now, my boys are close in age and even closer in size so when they took off in a dead sprint they didn't go very far. They struggled to get even one step toward their goal. Needless to say, they were exhausted when their turn was up. I keep thinking about that as I read this passage. My boys pulled and pulled in opposite directions. When one would finally get a few steps forward the other was going backward and then the other would pull harder in the other direction. They pulled with everything their little 50 pound bodies had but all they got was nowhere and tired. Do ya know the feeling 'cause I sure do.

I think verse 5 gives some insight into the makeup of this battle. "the Spirit He caused to live in us envies intensely." Okay, now I'm no theologian so bear with me-when one becomes a believer, he or she receives the Holy Spirit. The Holy spirit which is part of the Trinity of God, the Father and God the Son-a relationship so tightly intertwined they are 3 in 1. I would never claim to know how to explain the Trinity but FOR ME, I think of it this way (and God forgive me if this is totally off base). God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are the same and yet distinct, much like I am a woman, a wife, and a mother at the same time-completely different and separate yet all the same at one time. I am all wrapped up into one. I may have just totally botched that but remember, it's now 4:30 am. So, back to the passage. If God's Spirit is in me, it is yearning for the other parts of itself which is God the Father and God the Son. There is a constant pull because their relationship is so intimate and connected. The Spirit in me longs for the Father while the flesh in me longs to chase after it's desires. The inflatable is inside my soul-make sense?

Now, you may be wondering, so what now? Well, hate to burst your bubble but I'm not there yet. I do know that the next verse says, "But He gives us more grace. . . " And also verse 4 indicates that we do indeed have a choice to make which I think will be my next issue to post about. But for now, In all honesty, I'm still battling. And this may or may not be a shocking statment, but I'm okay with that. I don't mind warring it out because I know working out and through these battles will produce a quality faith-one that is not a mile wide and an inch deep. Sure it's uncomfortable and I am so very tired but in the end I pray that the faith that is formed in me will not only be wide but deep and unfathomable and when I can no longer see the bottom of it I will know that it has all been worth it.

Checkin' In

Just thought I'd check in again. Had a full day today shopping with my Mom and my sweet Ella Rose-a nice little girls day! We went to Lifeway and were laughing about how great it would be to get locked in a Lifeway store overnight. Oh-surrounded by all those books-HEAVEN! I bought "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan and couldn't wait to crack it open in the car rider line. I've heard great things about it and I've really identified with alot just in the first few pages. I'll keep you posted as to my thoughts along the way. So, it was a good day, event wise. On the inside, I feel pretty restless again. Ya know like I've got these great big wings that are aching to spread out and fly but my feet are stuck in a ton of rock hard cement. I pray that God will speak to me in some way and give me insight as to why I feel that way. I have no doubt that He will so maybe I should just pray that I won't be so distracted that I don't hear Him. So, I'm thinking that if there is anyone reading these posts, I'd love to get some discussion going. Maybe you've been where I'm at and have some words of wisdom or encouragement. Maybe you have no idea what I'm talking about (which in alot of instances I'm in the same boat with you) and you have questions. Please feel free to comment-it's definitely a safe place to do so. Well, that's all for tonight. I think I'm going to go chisel some concrete!

A Small Step

So, I've finally got it through my head that every entry does not have to be a novel.  The schedule of my days does not allow for that much time but short bits here and there-I can do.
I wanted to report a small progressive step-WOOHOO!  I am beginning to be able to listen to my "Christian" music again.  See, I've been in such a funk that listening to godly music on my iPod was difficult for me and I would usually skip to the next song.  (I wasn't kidding when I said I was at a low point guys!)  So anyways, this is a good sign.  God has been so patient and sweet with me in gently pulling me back to Him.  I have been reading "Shadows of the Almighty" by Elisabeth Elliot.  What an incredible book-it is literally rocking my world!  Well, I was really discouraged with my whole "music aversion" one day and I sat down to read from this book.  It's all journal entries and letters by Jim Elliot whose life and passionate pursuit of God is just otherworldly to me.  In one of his entries I read this:
"By God's grace I have been able to sing two songs honestly."
I can't even begin to tell you how encouraging that was to me!  I had tears in my eyes because I knew God sent that to me at just the right moment.  I could totally identify with that statement and so now when I listen to a song instead of skipping it, I know that it is truly only by God's grace that I can even open my mind and heart to hear things of Him.  Any tiny bit of praise I can offer Him, even that is only possible because of Him and His grace!
So, I mentioned that God is in my iPod, right?  Well, I was listening while I was making up the beds and this song came on.  I know that I've posted it before before it's even more special to me now.  Feast your ears and hearts on this one!

A Sealed Wanderer

For all my love of the more contemporary Christian music, I have in the last few years come to appreciate and love the traditional hymns.  They are so profound when you read them, full of solid doctrine and beautiful poetic language.  One of my favorites is "Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing":
"O to grace how great a debtor/Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let Thy grace, Lord, like a fetter/Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it/Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, Lord, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above."
I have found myself struggling lately in that discouraging paradox of being "sealed" ("Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ.  He anointed us, set His seal of ownership on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come"-2Corinthians 1:21-22) and yet still so stinkin' "prone to wander".  The wandering has been the more prominent companion in my heart these days and has left me feeling restless and stale.  The fight between going my own way, chasing after "lesser things" to occupy my mind, hands and time and "knowing better" is draining.  So, the other day, I'm unloading the dishwasher for the third, yes third, time and I'm thinking "How did I get to this point? and Why am I so indifferent toward the things of God lately?"  I start running through people and circumstances that are difficult for me and all the "If only. . . . " scenarios.  Well, the next thing I know, a miracle occured.  God inhabited my iPod!  Yes, that is correct.  I am now convinced that the God of all the universe is in my iPod!  Because, right smack dab in the middle of my Blame/Pity party, these lyrics ring out:
i've got faith in the bank and money in my heart
i've got a calloused place where your ring used to be, my love
i've traded naked and unashamed
for a better place to hide
for a righteous mask, a suit of fig leaves and lies
i thought the cattle on a thousand hills
was not enough to pay my bills
and i fell in love with those who proved me wrong
and now i want a broken heart
now there's a great pad lock
on the place where i was free
and i'm feeling bad from swallowing that key
now i work real hard but i mostly call in sick
of a broken back from the ground fighting back at me
i cannot look you in the eye
so i check the knots on my disguise
'cause i fell in love with fashion in the dark
and now i want a broken heart
i've got alibis for every crime
a sbustitute to do my time
'cause Your heart breaks enough on both our parts
so now i want a broken heart
now i want a broken heart
now i want a broken heart
Talk about nailing it on the head!    Oh but wait, it doesn't stop there.  Then, I hear "Love is Relentless" by Jill Phillips.  Guys, you can't even hardly find this song anywhere on the internet.  It was like, wedged in a compilation CD from who knows when.  So, the lyrics of the chorus:
"Your love is relentless
Your touch leaves me defenseless
I fight, I scream, I shout
I run, til the road runs out
But Your desire is endless
Your love is relentless"
Pretty much the soundtrack of my spiritual life for this season!  Now, this is the part that makes me a little nervous.  I'm thinking, "God, I don't desire the things of You these days-I really want to, but I don't.  It doesn't come naturally, instead it feels like hard work.  God, I feel so far from You lately but I know You're still there so what do I do?"  Immediately, the thought came "Just choose Me."  Three simple words that carry such tremendous weight.  That is my first step-to choose to choose Him.  Now what?  This was where it got downright scary because the next thought was "Write about it."  Can ya hear the crash of the dishes I was putting away?!   Now, I don't mind sharing little bits of my crazy life or interesting things I've discovered, but my own personal journey of faith NOT leaving out all the yucky stuff -well good grief!  I can just picture mothers shielding their children and moving to the other side of the hallway when I pass by!  But, I've already chosen to choose HIM, so I'm thinking that saying "I don't think so" at this point would be a step in the wrong the direction.  So, I guess the blog will take a slightly new direction for  awhile.  I will be writing honestly through a spiritually shallow point in my life right now.  I will not advertise new entries since, to be honest, I'm nervous for anyone to read them.  I have 2 rules for myself (and anyone who might want to discuss):
1.  I will not make excuses or blame others.  A low point in my spiritual walk is never dependent on someone else or some situation.  "You can't change how you got here, but you can change what you do from here." -paraphrasing Ergun Caner
2.  I will be gut level honest-no sugar coating.  The truth is sometimes messy but a wise man once said, "I will sacrifice cleanliness for authenticity anyday."
So, on this road,  I hope that you will be a fellow passenger.  If you are not a Christ follower, I hope that I don't scare you away or feed any misconceptions you may have about those who profess to be one.  Instead, I hope you will find it insightful, refreshing, helpful and maybe it will even inspire some questions and seeking in your own life.  Please feel free to comment or ask questions.  If you are a Christ follower, my hope is that you might lift me up in your prayers.  I am not naive and so I know that this is a battle.  I am not afraid because I am following my Jehovah Nissi (The LORD my Banner) and I am assured victory, but I am in great need of courage, faith, a will to obey and the strength to continue choosing Him each day.  I also hope that you might be encouraged, especially if you have ever been in the same boat and felt like you were all alone and the only one who just couldn't seem to pull it all together.  I hope you will also feel free to comment and maybe we can build each other up.
Well, I must move on to my daily responsibilities but I will be writing soon!  I am including the songs referred to in this post for your enjoyment (except for the Jill Phillips song which like I said is so obscure, it's crazy that it even popped up on my iPod).  The second song has a forever long intro but you can just fast forward a little.  Enjoy!

This Crazy Beautiful Mess

Who knows what this post will look like.  Usually, I have something written out even if it's just a few ideas and notes.  But today,  the brain is foggy and my house is dirty (again!) so I will be writing during cleaning breaks.  Also, as I'm writing I hear Sam and Ella Rose arguing (again!) so I guess I will also be writing during referee breaks as well.  It kinda sounds like I'm in a grumpy mood but actually that's not the case.  I'm really enjoying the soaking rain we've been getting all morning.  Everything looks greener and I just love the smell of rain.  It's Friday and we've all made it through the week.  You can already feel the restlessness in the air as all the kids are sensing that the school year is almost over-no more homework and getting up early (and for me, no more car rider line-YAHOO!)  I hope to get a lot accomplished today cleaning wise.  I complain alot about having to clean but on the bright side, cleaning time is where I get to listen to all my music AND I get a lot of my thinkin' done while I clean.  Already, I've been thinking about a bible study I just finished with a group of incredible ladies.  I am planning on facilitating the study with some of my girlfriends in the near future.  Let me rephrase, God is planning on me facilitating the study.  My question is why in the world would He want ME to do it?!   The title of my blog has the words "crazy" and "mess" in it for crying out loud!   It should be obvious that I do NOT have my stuff together!  BUT, I realize that the crazy mess may be me but the beautiful part, well, that's all God.  Once again, it's not about me and what I've done, it's about who He is and what He has done and is doing in spite of me.  When I'm unfaithful (which is often), He's still relentlessly faithful.  When I'm confused and don't know what to do, He is seeing the whole picture and in His wisdom is orchestrating everything for His purpose and my good.  When I feel like I'm about to unravel, He's still lovingly and gracefully holding all things together.  When I think "Oh, I can't do that!", He's saying "Good, now that we've got that straightened out, let Me get to work in you.  I've got an adventure I want to take you on girl!"  It's mind boggling actually!  Well, I didn't intend to go into the meaning behind the name of my blog but I warned you that I didn't know what this post would look like.  I guess it's  kind of appropriate since this is the first official post under the new name.  As far as the Bible study goes, I told God I would do it.  I shook my head in that  "I hope You know what You're doing" sort of way.  I mean, I haven't matured past the "crazy mess" part yet.  But I guess maybe He sees, that for all I lack, at least I know that He put the "beautiful" in the middle of my "crazy mess"!

What Do I Know

I have not been able to get enough of this song!  I love it and it seems that little things keep popping up in my life these days that keep me coming back to these incredible lyrics.  I have discovered that the more I learn, the more I realize that I have only barely scratched the surface.  Just when I think I've got something figured out, I realize just how much I don't know.  And so this week, Holy Week, I've been thinking about how much I don't know about the lengths God goes to to show His love for me.  That's really what this week is about, right?  Passionate love that's extreme and beyond our human comprehension.  Holy God, sent His Son to die for me and you.  Simple sentence but at the same time so mind blowing.  I'll admit that I've heard it so many times over my lifetime so far that I've gotten numb to it.  I hate to say that, but it's true and if you grew up in church in the Bible belt,  you know you'd say the same thing.  Maybe it's because I have kids now or maybe it's because I've lived long enough to get some heavy duty sin under my belt.  I don't know, but this year I think I'm just starting to feel the weight of that statement.  I tried to imagine if I was asked to sacrifice my own son for people I did not know.  No brainer-NO WAY!   But God sacrificed His Son on behalf of an eternity of people AND He DID know them.  He looked through time and saw every single person, every single heart, every single  motivation, every single time He would speak and be ignored, every single time He would show love and grace and be rejected, every single time He would relentlessly pursue us offering His best and we would still choose someone or something else over Him.  And yet, He did it anyway.  On my very best day, I will never be able to wrap my mind around even a fraction of that kind of love.  If Jesus would go so far as the cross for me, who's to say how far He would go to get my attention, to show Himself to me, to prove His love for me day in and day out?  The crucifixion proves to me that He's no holds barred, no rules, no limits.  If He's neat and manageable and heaven help me, explainable, then I don't really know who He is.  Like the song said, "I think I made You too small" and I think I'm finally realizing what a sinful tragedy that has been in my life.  There's another song sung by Mandisa (for all you American Idol freaks,er I mean fans out there) called "God Speaking" and the lyrics of the chorus say:
Who knows how He'll get a hold of us
Get our attention to prove He is enough
He'll do and He'll use whatever He wants to
To tell us "I love you".
He can do and use whatever He wants to speak to us.  Of course, I believe He primarily uses the Bible, but think of all the other things He uses.  Nature, a conversation, a book, a song, a billboard, a loss, an obstacle.  And even crazier than that, He can tailor it to fit each of us perfectly.  He knows how much I love music and books, so He often uses a song or a sentence to grab my attention.  He designed You too and so He can speak to you in a specific way that can touch you like nothing else can.  WOW!  He does ALL this because He loves us.  He's already proved it.  He's already done the ultimate-you'd think that would be enough.  But His love is unfathomably limitless and crazy wild!  So big that even a glimpse into it would drive us to our knees.  So I have spent this week basking in my own ignorance, thankful that He has allowed me to know just enough to know that I don't (and on this side of heaven won't ever) know much.

Christmas To Me

I have a million things I should be doing right now, but there are many reasons why this post is in order.
1.  I said I would post soon and that was a long time ago.  If I want to teach my kids to do what they say they are going to do then I must do the same.
2.  I want to post about Christmas and if I don't do it now, it will be after Christmas and a post about Christmas after Christmas just seems weird.
3.  My Momma told me to!
So, here goes.  Nothing profound or exciting today, my brain just won't function on that level.  I just love this time of the year and feel like reflecting on why I love it and so I will share that wealth of Christmas memories and tidbits with you all.  I wrote them all down so I wouldn't forget anything, now where are my notes.  I know they're here somewhere.  Oh crap!  I can't find my notes!  I'm nothing without my notes!  I thought for sure it was right here between my notes for "How to Change Your Husband" and "My Relationship with My Hair"!  Yes!  There they are-Praise Jesus!  Oh people, if you could just live inside my head for a day!  Now, deep breath in, let it out and here we go. . .
What I Love About Christmas
  • Opening one present on Christmas Eve which is always special Christmas jammies.
  • My mom used to have tins of homemade candy sitting around everywhere.  Usually some random items dipped in chocolate-YUM!  (So wish my metabolism could still handle that!)
  • I remember one year my parents made homemade doughnuts-FABULOUS!  I have the coolest parents!
  • Being so excited I couldn't sleep.
  • Waking up to cookie crumbs and empty milk glasses-thanks for doing that Mom and Dad!
  • Two words-Christmas lights!!!  I could ride around forever just looking at people's lights.
  • Sneaking out to see what Santa brought and trying to play quietly so Mom and Dad wouldn't know I was up.  This usually resulted in everyone having to go ahead and get up hours before the sun came out.  (P.S. I think my brother still did this well into his 20's!)
  • Coming home one night and looking up in the sky and seeing a red light.  I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that it was Rudolph!  That airplane pilot will never know how he made my Christmas that year.
  • Of course, Christmas presents!  I had a few stand outs over the years.  Strawberry Shortcake figurines that smelled like strawberries, a pink bike, a globe with raised mountain ranges (NERDY!), my very own dictionary (NERDIER!), lipstick that looked like a red crayon (My brother got into it and destroyed it 2 minutes after I opened it-I'm still fuming!), the Snoopy Snowcone machine (which, incidently, I bought last summer for my own children), the year my Dad got my Mom a real engagment ring.  Now before you start doing the math, they had been married many years, she just never got a ring.  Anyways, that was and still is a precious memory.  I'll never forget the look on her face.
  • The snow day my Mom woke us up with hot chocolate and the sounds of our Amy Grant Christmas tape.
  • Big fat candy cane sticks.  Remember, the ones that looked like a big club.  That was dangerous on so many levels.
  • Coming home from school to start Christmas break, which got even sweeter when it meant coming home from college for a long break at home, Momma's cooking and a washing machine that didn't cost money.
  • Best Christmas movie of all time-Christmas Vacation.  I don't care who you are, it is hilarious!
  • Christmas morning with pineapple orange juice, sausage balls and monkey bread.  Now that I am looking at it in writing. it sounds very weird and disgusting but I promise it's the best.  Mom still brings it over to my house on Christmas morning.
  • Christmas Eve service with Brother Glenn.  I always think about when we would sing Silent Night and have to hold up our candles at certain parts.  I don't know why we did that and it always felt a little awkward, but man I miss it!
  • The Christmas I was pregnant with our first child and Jimmy bought me my first pair of maternity jeans just so I could stuff my face and still stay dressed.
  • Christmas shopping for my own children!  I never thought anything could be more fun than getting presents from Santa on Christmas morning but seeing my kids' faces is way more fun!
  • Finally, and truly my most favorite thing about Christmas is that Jesus actually came.  I know most of you know that, but really try and take it in like it's the first time you ever heard it.  Scrunch up your face and squeeze your eyes shut if you have to.  He came!  Think of where you might be if He hadn't brought Himself down to our level.  Honestly, I don't think I would be here today.  The impact of His life-those two words-He came.  His love for each of us individually brought Him here to satisfy the holy wrath of God, to do what we could never do for ourselves, to make us even knowing who He is possible.  I can't wrap my mind around that kind of love nor can I say thank you enough.  But I will celebrate to the best of my ability and rejoice in the simple yet sweetly complex fact that He came!
Merry Christmas everyone!

Wrestling With God

I love the passage in Genesis where Jacob wrestled with God.  It might just be one of the most encouraging and freeing passages for me in my journey with Him.  During a particularly lonely and seemingly hopeless time in my life I wrestled with God myself.  I struggled with Him over the how's, the why's, and what for's of my pain.  At times I was angry with Him, at times I felt He was unkind, other times I resented His silence.  Sometimes I was too weak to do anything but sit dumbfounded and hurt in the presence of Someone I felt was ignoring me.  On top of my pain, I felt guilty about my feelings toward God.  But this story of Jacob brought the realization that I CAN wrestle with God.  It's OK to fight it out!  He's not afraid of my questions, my emotions and anger, my confusion.  My questions do not intimidate Him or cause Him to raise His defenses.  If you are willing to wrestle then there is still some fight left in you and there is still a desire for relationship.  Like Jacob, I said, "I will not let go!  I may not understand You, forgive me but I may not even like You!  I'm hanging on by a fingernail but I cannot and will not let You go!  Bless me!"
I still don't have all my answers I was looking for, but I did get the ones I needed.  Even more-oh how sweet You are LORD-I got Him.  We wrestled it out together-Him and me.  His blood, sweat and tears mixed with mine.  He wasn't sitting far off watching me struggle.  He was more than willing to get in there and get His hands dirty.  All I had to do was hang on if even by that one fingernail.  He was in there fighting with me for the answers I needed and helping me trust Him for the answers I don't need.  We have an understanding that it is possible for me to not let go even when I want to and He'll never let go and He'll never want to.  Sure, He left some battle scars.  Real battles always leave scars or they're not real battles. Scars are signs of wounds but they are also signs of healing.  The wounds are painful but God's own hands binding up my wounds so lovingly are such a worthwhile reward.  Like Jacob, I walk with a limp of sorts.  But my scars tell a story-my HIStory of struggle, faith, perserverance and of course love. You can't buy that at a Barnes and Noble!  Over time, I think my scars have gotten quite beautiful and they just might be my most prized possession.

Promises Kept

Thanks for hangin' in while computer problems and writing struggles have kept me away for a while.  I've wrestled with God a little over this post for two reasons.  One, I'm pretty transparent but there are still things I don't want everyone to know.  And two, maybe nobody wants to hear my "stuff".  No matter, God said "Don't worry about them, you need to say it and hear for your own benefit."  Oh well, if you've read any of the earlier posts, you already know I'm weird.  Besides, it's much easier to bear your soul when you can't see anyone's face.  So here goes. . .
To say my name and "stay at home mom" in the same sentence is truly a miracle.  Almost 10 years ago now, I could not stay home by myself for more than five minutes.  I am not exaggerating in the least.  I would be in full panic mode the minute my husband went out the door.  My brother would have to come over to my apartment in the mornings just so I could get ready for work.  I was absolutely beyond terrified to be alone.  I won't go into the why's of it all, mainly because I'm not completely clear on how it all started myself and even if I were, I'm sure I couldn't explain it.  Anyways, it was such a dark, painful and tortuous time in my life and even today I still struggle with it on some levels (but that's another post).  So anyways, imagine my thoughts when my first son was born and it was time for my husband to go back to work.  How in the world would I stay at home for 12 hours when it took all the strength I had to stay home 12 minutes?!  And on top of that, I was responsible for another totally dependant human-I couldn't even take care of myself.  And don't even get me started on how raging post pregnancy hormones played into it all!  To say that I was afraid would be like saying the Titanic was a bathtub toy boat!  I would literally pass out from fear and often!  I was thinking back to those early stay at home mom days and marveling at the fact that I'm still here and my now 3 children are for the most part pretty normal.  How did I survive?  Well, I made it and am making it today because God kept His promises.  Every single one and every single time.  He hasalways kept His promises.  Think about that a minute.  Never, not even once, has He broken a promise to me.  That is amazing!  He is always, always, always faithful.  Sometimes His promises are easy to believe-"In this world you will have trouble. . "  Yeah, to say I was living that one is an understatement-that promise was definitely ringing true.  Others were not so easy but in finding them and clinging to them even when I didn't know if He would come through, I found a new way to live.  His promises have become oxygen for my lungs and the lifeblood running through my veins.  I cannot survive without them and I don't want to.  Oh I wish there were better words but all I can say is He is so very faithful and trustworthy.  I cannot say that I always rely on Him and His promises but I can say that 100 percent of the time that I give Him the opportunity to prove Himself faithful-He is.  I guess that's the hard part-letting go.  Letting go of the lie that says "I can do this, I can fix this" or "As long as I have so and so or such and such, I'll be ok".  When we look to ourselves or others to come through and make everything better we will be gravely disappointed.  To be honest, relying on God is hard.  It's a choice that goes against our need for immediate comfort.  It doesn't always feel good and as a matter of fact, in my experience, it can be downright excruciating.  But I remember that at even the darkest and most hopeless feeling moments I felt the undercurrent of His promises carrying me along-tossing side to side and seasick, but still moving forward.  So, if you wondering what promises He was keeping, I will share a few and maybe you'll give Him the opportunity to keep His promises to you as well.
"May Your unfailing love come to me, O LORD, your salvation according to Your promise; then I will answer the one who taunts me, for I trust in Your word."-Psalm 119:41-42
"My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from Him.  He alone is my Rock and my salvation; He is my Fortress, I will never be shaken.  Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him.  Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our Refuge."-Psalm 62:1,5,8
"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be afraid." -John 14:27

"The Lord is near to all who call on Him; to all who call on Him in truth."-Psalm 145:18
"I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move.  Nothing will be impossible for you."-Matthew 17:20-21
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."-Philippians 4:6-7
"Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you."-Deuteronomy 31:6
"For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.  Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.  You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.  I will be found by you, declares the Lord, and will bring you back from captivity. . "-Jeremiah 29:11-14a
"No, in all things, we are more than conquerors."-Romans 8:37
"My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."-Psalm 73:25-26
"When I said, 'My foot is slipping', Your love O Lord supported me.  When anxiety was great within me, Your consolation brought joy to my soul."-Psalm 94:18-19
"O Lord, I have come to You for protection; don't let me be put to shame.  Rescue me, for You always do what is right.  Bend down and listen to me; rescue me quickly.  Be for me a great rock of safety, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me."-Psalm 31:1-2
"I will not fail you!"-Joshua 1:5
I know this has been rather lengthy and like I said at the beginning, this has been more for my own benefit than for others.  But maybe, just maybe, there's someone else out there that needs a kept promise.  Let go and let Him keep His promises to you!

God's One Cruel Joke

God has truly been so faithful to me-far, far beyond what I deserve and I am not just saying that, I am living that!  But on that great and glorious day when I finally behold His face I will have one bone to pick.  Now, before you run for cover from the lightning you fear is about the strike-don't worry.  I've already talked all this over with Him and He knows my heart and my intention.  I think He probably shook His head and chuckled a bit too.  This issue, this cruel joke as I see it, is that God gave me a huge love for music yet refused to bless me with a voice to match that love.  When I say I love music, I mean I LOVE music so much so that I can't put into words how much I love it.  It is so powerful!  Think about it-have you ever heard a song and it took you right back to a specific place and time.  New Kids on the Block-I'm right back in my basement with my girlfriends making up dances until the whole carpet was fuzzed up.  Groovy Kind of Love-school dance and getting up the nerve to ask a boy to dance for Ladies choice.  I can almost smell the gym and Polo cologne!  Some of you are singing the songs right now!  I know there's a lot of music out there that's just outright tacky.  But the devil perverted everything that was good ya'll and that includes music.  I think God did "extra good" when He made music and He meant for it to be another way to draw people to Himself.  Music can change my mind and my heart.  It can bring conviction, repentance, and restoration.  It can be a catalyst for worship for me with just a few notes.  It truly touches something in my soul that explodes at a great song and it takes all I can to be a "good Southern Baptist" and contain myself!  I was telling my friend yesterday that I had to go shave my legs because I'd had goosebumps all day from listening to a Vicki Yohe CD!  I am sure that when God was putting me all together, He somehow put a "darker tone" soul in me and somewhere out there is dark skinned woman walking around wondering how in the world she got such a "white" soul!  (I hope that did not offend anyone because I mean it with total love and respect!)  Anyways, I just can't understand why He did not give me the voice I want.  I'm sure that a voice mixture of Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones would suit me much better.  I've tried to come to terms with this joke He's played on me.  I practice so hard when no one is around.  I turn the music up really loud and belt it out.  My heart and body rock out but that voice, oh that voice, it is just so sad!  I mourn it ya'll, I truly do!  So there is my beef, my one grievance, and I told God all about it today.  I was so fed up and so hurt about it.  I wanted to sound good for Him, ya know.  I gotta tell ya, He's so sweet and so kind.  He told me, not to my ears of course, apparently they are tone deaf anyway, but He told me to my heart which hears much better.  "Darlin' ('cuz sometimes He talks southern to me when my feelings are hurt) Darlin', I love your voice 'cuz what I hear doesn't come out of your mouth.  I hear what comes out of that soul I gave you.  When you're singing to Me, I just stop, close My eyes and nod.  And sweet child, it is beautiful music to My ears.  Bravo and well done!"  Well, I guess that changes everything.  I think I'll go sing a little while I fold the laundry!
P.S.  I posted a duet of Bonnie Raitt and Norah Jones on my facebook page.  You can also look it up on youtube.  Stinkin' awesome!

Feelin' the Pressure

Ok-when I signed up to do this blog thing no one told me about the pressure!  Now, I feel the pressure not only to post but to post something worth reading!  What do I do-tuck tail and run or risk that everyone who reads my stuff will now know that I am really not very funny or wise but will still like me anyway?  HMMMM-I think I'll stick with it because I know at the very least my parents will always read my blog and marvel at how their genetic combination turned out!  Besides, in the last post I already told you lots of yucky things about myself so what have I got to lose?  So today, since I have not had a moment to think of anything original, I will share the wisdom of others that has impacted me this week (in the form of quotes of course!)  I hope to write on some of these subjects later but until then-ENJOY!
"God's love moved Him to sacrifice that which meant to most to Him-His only Son.  Our response, if we truly understand His love for us, is the desire to give back to God that which means the most to us."-Henry Blackaby
"You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the LORD your God gave you has failed.  Every promise has been fulfilled-not one has failed."-Joshua 23:14
"A comprehended God is no God at all."-Gerhard Testelgen
"I don't think there is any better worship than wonder."-Donald Miller Blue Like Jazz
"The problem with deep belief is that it costs something.  And there is something inside me, some selfish beast of a subtle thing that doesn't like the truth at all because it carries responsibility, and if I actually believe these things I have to do something about them.  It isn't cool.  I mean it's cool in aReality Bites, Welcome to Sarajevo, Amnesty International sense, but that is only as good as dreadlocks.  Chicks dig it to a point, but you can't be all about it; you also have to want a big house and expensive clothes because in the end our beliefs are  about as enduring as seasonal fashion.  We don't even believe things because we believe them anymore.  We only believe things because they are cool things to believe."-Donald Miller Blue Like Jazz
"In the world of faith, particularly, some things have to be believed to be seen."-Philip Yancey Finding God in Unexpected Places
"God is already present, in the most unexpected places.  We just need to make God visible."-Philip Yancey Finding God in Unexpected Places
And my fave this week-"Don, the Bible is so good with chocolate.  I always thought the Bible was more of a salad thing, you know, but it isn't.  It is a chocolate thing."-Donald Miller Blue Like Jazz
Can you tell I've been reading Blue Like Jazz?  I hope you like these and they at the least, make you chuckle or say Hmmmm and at the most direct you to God.

Dispelling the Rumors

Well yall, it's time for my first quote and I gotta tell ya-I love this one!  It's from the book "Blue Like Jazz" by Donald Miller.
"It feels better to have people love the real me than the me I invented."
I've had a few people inform me lately that they think I "have it all together".  To be honest, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.  Laugh because it's so far from the truth that it's comical, or cry because I've led people to believe a lie and for that I apologize.  So today, I am dispelling the rumors.
Spend one day in my house or better yet, ask my husband and children, and they will tell you that I do NOT "have it all together".  They love me so they will probably try and sugar coat it but they know the truth.  I'm extremely impatient and quick to lose my temper and yell.  I'm very lazy and the worst procrastinator.  Sometimes I don't keep my promises.  I have a lot of fear and doubt in me that causes many problems.  And please tell me there is another mother out there that will admit that she does not like to play!!! (I feel so guilty about that all the time.)  I'm pretty critical and manipulative.  I struggle tremedously with pride, rebellion and legalism.  I could go on and on but I just wanted to give you a glimpse of who you're dealing with here.  I don't tell you all these things to come down on myself or beat myself up.  Actually, there's great freedom in it.  Now, I am free to have relationships with others based on honesty.  No holds barred interaction we can learn from and change from.
I will tell you this-if there is anything in my life that is "together", it is because Jesus put it together and He's holding it together!  I don't have to hide my weaknesses but I can "boast gladly" about them because it gives me the opportunity to show all that Christ can do in a life.  I still want you to like me but I'd much rather you like the Jesus in me-it's much better.  I know it may sound cliche, but God really likes me.  I could pick the petals off all the flowers in the world and I will always end up with "He loves me".  I need to know that and really believe it or I'm a mess.
Hey!  I found something that I've just got to tell ya!  I'm not a Bible scholar so I really hope I'm not misinterpreting Scripture.  Romans 4:17 says"God. . . calls things that are not as if they were".  I believe it is talking about how God can create things out of nonexistance but I'm encouraged by what may just be a bonus meaning.  He calls me like He sees me-no hiding it.  But He also sees me as I COULD be!  Anybody else need to know that besides me?  Through the lens of Christ, He sees me as patient, gentle of speech, a hard worker, a promise keeper, loving, unselfish, humble, obedient and full of grace!  How's that for self-esteem?!  He's redeemed me ya'll!  I can't get over it and I hope I never do.
